*Winding up the national week of peaceful action*

We are happy and sad at the same time.

Happy that the national week of peaceful action did not only end successfully, it has also triggered a series of events which might well lead to sustained action and political pressure on the ZANU PF government. In Tajamuka, we believe that action, peaceful protests and political pressure is the only language ZANU PF understands.

We want to thank all the people of Zimbabwe who participated and supported the week of peaceful action. Our leaders and activists across the country and in the diaspora, in particilar in SA, media, members of the public and everyone else. Believe you me, the government felt the pressure and we must press ahead.

On the other hand we are sad to be writing this update on this day-arguably the darkest day in the history of Zimbabwe’s fight for democracy. This is the day that thousands of opposition supporters were maimed in an election sham in which President Mugabe sought to defend himself by all and any means necessary (and even unnecessary). Scores of the gallant sons and daughters paid the ultimate price in pursuit of the dream of freedom and democracy-which to this day remains elusive. It is in this context that today we pledge to pursue the dream for which they laid down their lives-our comrades cannot die and suffer in vain. They are turning in their graves and will only rest when that which they died for has been realised. We will not give up until those objectives are full filled.

We remember also their sometimes forgotten families, who suffer and mourn in silence, the orphaned children they left behind who still have to eat and go to school, the houses and homes that were burnt down or demolished by the regime. We cannot let down those families. Where we can, we should cater for their welfare and livelihoods and give them every support and solidarity possible.

In conclusion, we in Tajamuka believe that we are pursuing a just legitimate and winnable cause. But we cannot win without action. Let us act!
